The Nürburgring is a 150,000 spectator capacity motorsports complex around the village of Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. It is located about 70 km (43 mi) south of Cologne, and 120 km (75 mi) northwest of Frankfurt.
The Nurburgring features a Grand Prix race track built in 1984, and a much longer old "North loop" track which was built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains.
The North Loop (Nordschleife) is 20.8 km (12.9 mi) long and has more than 300 metres (1,000 feet) of elevation change from its lowest to highest points. Jackie Stewart nicknamed the old track "The Green Hell".
The Nurburgring used to be the German Grand Prix circuit until Lauda's crash in 1976 ended its GP career.
During public sessions, its legal status is that of a one-way public toll-road with no speed limit (except on the approach to the two exits). Vehicles must be 100% road-legal, and normal German road traffic law applies. Unlike a trackday there's no safety briefing or helmet required. Road insurance is also required, but don't assume that your fully comp cover applies.
